Kiwilife is an exciting Blue Orb initiative, documenting the life of the kiwi through a 'webumentary'.

Project Background


KiwiLife fulfills a long term objective of Blue Orb, with the project hatching a world first in 2002 when a kiwi chick was born live on the internet.

This was a self-funded prototype with the goal of showing the hard, tireless and often unrecognised work of people behind the scenes, including the Department of Conservation, local animal shelters and zoos, who all work on a daily basis to ensure our national icon, the kiwi, remains protected.

According to Blue Orb Trustee, Tristan Tuckey, it is these people who are keeping the kiwi alive in New Zealand. "These are the unsung heroes of the kiwi, who have devoted their lives to nurturing the kiwi, slowly but surely, back into our backyards. We wanted to recognise their work, and decided that the internet was the best medium to achieve that". 

KiwiLife can be viewed at www.KiwiLife.co.nz, with a vision that has now evolved to incorporate emerging technology improvements, and the knowledge gained in working closely with the National Kiwi community over the last five years.

Long Term Vision


The long term vision of Blue Orb is to utilise technology to provide a window into the life of wild kiwi. This would provide a low impact, yet unprecedented insight into the lives of our mysterious national icon in their natural habitat.

Utilising a combination of tracking technology, a network of cameras, motion sensors and good old fashioned kiwi ingenuity, we plan to provide a unique online experience for people around the world. Watch this space!
